Guiding Principles
Sexual violence is based in the abuse of power and control and is a significant part of the broader continuum of abuse, assault and violence. A commitment to prevention and change requires an awareness of the foundations and patterns of violence, the subtle and not-so-subtle forms of violence, and the behavioural, emotional and socio-economic consequences such violence has for our community and our society. Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse advocates a position of zero tolerance for all types of violence.
An effective community responds to the needs of each individual member while addressing sexual abuse and sexual assault issues in an inclusive, proactive manner. The leadership of a healthy agency will foster a safe and supportive atmosphere for those affected by the various forms of sexual abuse and sexual assault, create an open and interactive relationship with community groups, and develop a strong, productive partnership with the broader Calgary community.
While some individuals and groups are additionally vulnerable to sexual abuse and assault, services available to survivors should not discriminate based on age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, race, religion, colour, or socio-economic status. All people are entitled to quality services designed and implemented to meet their needs.
CCASA strives to involve the broader community in its structure and service delivery. The Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, clients and the broader community have equally important roles in the successful functioning of the agency. Their input and feedback are essential at all levels to ensure accountability and ongoing growth for the organization.
Built into the structure of the organization are means to maximize the wellness of the agency, including diversity of frontline staff members’ roles and procedures for dealing with conflict and burnout, training of volunteers for varied support roles, and contributions of energy and expertise from the community.
Volunteer contributions are an invaluable source of support and strength in providing quality sexual abuse and sexual assault services. Whether through the expertise and commitment of those who serve on the Board of Directors, the skills and energy of its front-line volunteers, or community fundraisers and consultants, volunteers represent strong connections between CCASA and the Calgary community; their satisfaction is a measure of the agency’s success.
